Adding an asset and classifying it (investment vs. repair)
Assets you invest in (furniture, appliances, renovations) are tracked separately from one-off repairs.
Investment vs. repair
A repair (fixing something that already existed) is typically deducted in full the year it happens. An investment (buying new furniture, appliances, or making a renovation that adds value) is instead amortized — its cost is spread across several years. Keyio tracks these as assets, separate from regular expenses, so you don't have to remember which years still have deductions remaining on an older purchase.
- 1From a property, go to Assets and click "Add Asset."
- 2Enter the acquisition cost and date, and mark it as an investment or a repair.
- 3For investments, set the amortization period yourself (a 10 to 20 year range) — Keyio then spreads the cost evenly across that period for you.
